BPLA and PLA Announce Plans to Establish Operations in Central Myanmar

October 28, 2024

On the anniversary of “Operation 1027,” the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and Burma People’s Liberation Army (BPLA) announced their intent to establish a base of operations in Central Myanmar, or the “Anyar region.” BPLA Commander Maung Saung Kha formally announced on social media, saying, “Today marks the anniversary of Operation 1027. Our Spring Revolution forces have made significant progress under the leadership of the Three Brothers Alliance. Soon, BPLA will be based in Anyar, and we are hopeful that the people there will welcome us.”

The PLA confirmed through news agencies that some units have already set up operations in the Sagaing region. PLA battalions have been active in Sagaing since late September and recently took part in the successful attack on a military convoy in Budalin. They were warmly received by the local community upon their return from battles in Northern Shan State.

The BPLA, PLA, and certain People’s Defense Force (PDF) groups have been trained as part of Brigade 611 under the leadership of the Kokang Army (MNDAA) since the early stages of Operation 1027. In a recent statement, the MNDAA announced that they would continue to protect Special Region 1 but would not expand to further conflicts with PDFs or the National Unity Government (NUG).

Due to reliance on China for electricity, telecommunications, and trade, Kokang is strategically limited. However, Operation 1027 has enabled resistance forces to secure 38 towns across Northern Shan, Rakhine, Chin State, and Mandalay region within a year, with the alliance involving the Three Brothers Alliance, the KNDF, the BNRA, DPLA, local defense units, and PDF battalions under NUG.
