Myanmar Junta Chief and President Min Aung Hlaing Begins State Visit to China

Myanmar junta chief and President Min Aung Hlaing has begun a five-day state visit to China at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to statements issued by China’s Foreign Ministry and Myanmar’s military authorities.

Min Aung Hlaing and a high-level Myanmar delegation departed Naypyitaw by special aircraft on the morning of June 15 and are scheduled to remain in China until June 19.

According to the military authorities, the delegation includes Minister for the President’s Office Khin Maung Yi, Foreign Minister Than Swe, Finance and Revenue Minister Kan Zaw, Minister for Electric Power and Energy Ko Ko Lwin, Industry Minister Charlie Than, Commerce Minister Tun Ohn, Kachin State Chief Minister Khet Htein Nan, Shan State Chief Minister Sai Htein Soe, senior military officials and business representatives.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Min Aung Hlaing will hold talks with President Xi Jinping during the visit. He is also expected to meet Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress.

The military authorities said discussions will focus on strengthening the longstanding “Pauk-Phaw” relationship between the two countries, as well as cooperation in economic development, security and other sectors.

Min Aung Hlaing is also expected to attend an economic conference and visit advanced industrial and technology facilities during his stay in China.

Beijing has described the visit as an opportunity to deepen comprehensive strategic cooperation between China and Myanmar.

The trip comes after Min Aung Hlaing was designated as president under the military-backed political restructuring that followed Myanmar’s 2021 coup. Although China had been widely expected to be his first overseas destination after assuming the presidency, he traveled to India earlier this month.

Political analysts say discussions are likely to focus on economic cooperation, border security, bilateral trade and Chinese investment projects in Myanmar.

Particular attention is being paid to developments in Rakhine, Kachin and Shan states, where China’s strategic and economic interests are closely linked to ongoing armed conflicts and security challenges.

Min Aung Hlaing previously visited China from August 30 to September 6, 2025, when he attended events related to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Beijing.

The visit comes at a time when armed conflicts continue across Myanmar and Chinese investments and cross-border trade routes face increasing security concerns. Observers are closely watching whether the trip will produce new agreements on political, economic and security cooperation between the two countries.
