A delegation from the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) met representatives of Myanmar’s military authorities on July 19, according to photographs of the talks that circulated publicly.

The images showed the TNLA delegation led by its vice chair, Tar Jok Jar, while the military side was represented by peace negotiators Yar Pyae and Khin Zaw Oo.

Neither the TNLA nor the military authorities had issued an official statement at the time of publication confirming the venue, the issues discussed or whether the two sides reached any agreement.

The meeting is believed to have taken place in Naypyidaw, marking a rare direct engagement between the TNLA and representatives of the military authorities inside Myanmar.

The TNLA and the military have held several rounds of talks since 2025 in Kunming, China, under Beijing’s mediation. However, the negotiations produced little progress because of disagreements over a ceasefire and territorial control.

Following further Chinese pressure and mediation in 2026, the TNLA withdrew its forces from Kyaukme and Nawnghkio in northern Shan State, allowing the military to regain control of the two towns.

The TNLA has said the withdrawals were a political decision intended to reduce civilian casualties.

The TNLA is a member of the Three Brotherhood Alliance, alongside the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) and the Arakan Army (AA).

The alliance launched Operation 1027 in October 2023 and subsequently captured a number of towns and military positions across northern Shan State.

New Day Myanmar contacted the TNLA for comment on the July 19 meeting but had not received a response by the time of publication.
