MRTV Announces Aung San Suu Kyi’s Sentence to Continue at Designated Residence

Myanmar’s state-run broadcaster MRTV has announced that the sentence of State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi will be transferred to a “designated residence,” where she will continue serving her punishment.

The announcement was made on the evening of April 30 by MRTV, which is controlled by the military authorities.

The statement did not disclose the location of the residence where she will be held, nor did it specify who authorized the decision.

Since the military coup, authorities have not clearly revealed where Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained. As a result, the term “designated residence” has raised fresh questions over whether this constitutes a genuine transfer to house arrest or remains another form of detention under strict control.

MRTV’s broadcast also showed footage of Aung San Suu Kyi wearing a white blouse and longyi, appearing to converse with a military officer and a police officer.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been held incommunicado for over 1,900 days (more than five years), with no independent verification of her condition, prompting increasing calls from domestic and international groups for proof that she is alive.

The announcement comes amid ongoing regional and international pressure, including calls from ASEAN to release political prisoners. It also follows recent diplomatic developments, such as the visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and remarks from Thailand suggesting that Myanmar’s return to the ASEAN stage may depend on her release.
