Min Aung Hlaing Invites Xi Jinping to Visit Myanmar

Myanmar military-backed President Min Aung Hlaing has invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to visit Myanmar at a mutually convenient time, according to a China-Myanmar joint statement dated June 17.

According to the joint statement, Min Aung Hlaing expressed gratitude to President Xi, the Chinese government and the people of China for warmly receiving the high-level Myanmar delegation.

The Myanmar delegation led by Min Aung Hlaing is visiting China from June 15 to 19 at the invitation of Xi Jinping as part of a state-level visit.

During the trip, Min Aung Hlaing and Xi held talks on bilateral relations, the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC), border stability, trade and infrastructure projects.

Following the meeting, the two sides reportedly signed 18 cooperation agreements covering areas including border trade, transportation, healthcare, disaster relief and media cooperation.

Xi last visited Myanmar on January 17 and 18, 2020, in a state visit that marked his first trip to the country as Chinese president. The visit also coincided with the 70th anniversary of China-Myanmar diplomatic relations.

The joint statement did not specify whether Xi had formally accepted Min Aung Hlaing’s invitation or when any future visit to Myanmar might take place.
