Key Asia Highway for Thailand–Myanmar Border Trade Reopens

2 April 2026 | New Day Myanmar

The Myawaddy–Kawkareik section of the Asia Highway, a crucial route for Thailand–Myanmar border trade, has been reopened on the morning of April 2 by the military council, according to drivers.

However, cargo trucks and heavy vehicles are still not permitted to pass. Only small vehicles and passenger vans are currently allowed to use the road.

A driver told New Day Myanmar, “Cargo trucks and trailers are not allowed yet. There are checkpoints along the Kyondoe–Myawaddy road. Vehicles are being stopped and inspected, and we have to show identification.”

The Asia Highway had been closed since around December 2023 due to clashes. Although there are currently no active battles along the route, drivers say security concerns remain.
