Min Aung Hlaing and Nan Ni Ni Aye Elected as Vice Presidents

31 March 2026 | New Day Myanmar

Two vice presidents were officially elected during today’s parliamentary session held in Naypyitaw by the military authorities, with junta leader Min Aung Hlaing and USDP lawmaker Nan Ni Ni Aye selected for the positions.

At the session held on March 30, four candidates were nominated for the vice presidency. In the Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House), Min Aung Hlaing and Dr. Kyaw Swe of the National Unity Party were nominated, while in the Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House), Nan Ni Ni Aye of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) and Dr. Manam Tu Ja of the Kachin State People’s Party (KSPP) were put forward.

In today’s vote, Min Aung Hlaing secured 247 votes in the Lower House, while Dr. Kyaw Swe received only 10 votes, resulting in Min Aung Hlaing’s election as vice president.

In the Upper House, Nan Ni Ni Aye received 117 votes, while Dr. Manam Tu Ja received just over 30 votes, leading to Daw Nan Ni Ni Aye’s election as vice president.

As a result, Dr. Kyaw Swe and Dr. Manam Tu Ja were unsuccessful in securing the vice presidential posts.

Political analysts suggest that the outcome aligns with a broader plan for Min Aung Hlaing to assume the presidency, with other candidates likely participating only as nominal contenders.

Although Min Aung Hlaing handed over his role as Commander-in-Chief to his close ally General Ye Win Oo on March 30, he was still referred to by the rank of Senior General during today’s vote counting.
