11 Years On, Truth Still Concealed in the Murder of Two KBC Teachers, Says KHRW

19 January 2026

Although 11 years have passed since the brutal rape and murder of two volunteer teachers from the Kachin Baptist Convention (KBC), the military junta is still concealing the truth, according to the Kachin Human Rights Watch (KHRW).

On January 19, 2015, two KBC teachers, Ms. Khawng Nan Sin and Ms. Maran Lu Ra, were brutally raped and murdered in Kaung Khar village, Pansai (Kyu Koke) Township, Muse District, northern Shan State. Today marks the 11 years of the crime.

“KHRW will continue to stand for ending impunity,” said KHRW spokesperson Ko Jacob.

He added that the case is evidence of the military’s long-standing pattern of lawless crimes against civilians.

At the time of the incident, a military column was operating near Kaung Khar village. Despite the existence of evidence implicating the military, justice has still not been delivered. The Kachin community therefore held commemorative activities to mark the anniversary.

Since seizing power, the junta has openly committed numerous crimes, including mass killings, that have led to the deaths of civilians.

Human rights organizations continue to urge the international community to take effective action against the junta’s crimes targeting civilians. Meanwhile, resistance forces are continuing their struggle to dismantle the military dictatorship.
