Meta Removes Myanmar Junta’s Propaganda Accounts

After complaints submitted by Justice For Myanmar, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has removed a total of 109 accounts linked to Mytel, its sales agents, MECtel agents, and accounts distributing junta propaganda content from MRTV and MWD, according to a statement released by Justice For Myanmar.

The action was reportedly taken under Meta’s 2021 policy banning military-controlled businesses and media organizations in Myanmar.

Mytel and MECtel are telecommunications businesses connected to the military-owned Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC), which is controlled by junta leader Min Aung Hlaing.

MEC has already been sanctioned by the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and Canada.

Justice For Myanmar stated that Mytel and MECtel generate revenue for the junta while also supporting digital surveillance operations, which the group says facilitate war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Facebook has previously removed accounts linked to Mytel and other military-owned businesses multiple times, but those operations have frequently resurfaced under different names, according to the group.

Justice For Myanmar also said that the removal of junta propaganda channels from multiple social media platforms has reduced their ability to livestream and spread disinformation and hate speech.

Ahead of the junta’s so-called election, MRTV was removed from Twitch and Kick, while MWD was removed from TikTok.

However, Justice For Myanmar said stronger measures are still needed to fully restrict the Myanmar military regime’s online presence.

The group also called on Alphabet, Apple, TikTok and Telegram to ban the Myanmar military regime and its business networks from their platforms.
