Kim Aris Says ICJ Hearings Are Crucial for Justice and Accountability

18 January 2026

As hearings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the Rohingya genocide begin, this is a critically important moment for justice and accountability, said Kim Aris, also known as Ko Htein Lin, the son of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

He wrote on social media that the military must respect international law and should not repeat the brutal atrocities of the past, emphasizing that justice is not something that can be selectively applied.

He also stated that his mother, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, spent nearly 20 years of her life under detention by the military and continues to be unlawfully held incommunicado along with other political prisoners, without the world knowing their whereabouts.

Furthermore, he said that as long as elected leaders remain imprisoned and the will of the people is denied, genuine justice will not exist in Myanmar.

He added that true accountability must be based on respect for the people’s choices, freedom, and the recognition of human dignity.
