On July 8, the junta’s Myawady News Agency announced that the Chinese New Year will be recognized as a public holiday. This decision follows discussions between Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar, Mr. Chen Hai, in 2023. The move aims to strengthen the relationship and kinship with neighboring China.
Starting in the 2025 calendar, Chinese New Year will be officially included as a gazetted holiday. This decision highlights the junta’s efforts to enhance ties with China, reflecting the frequent visits of top Chinese officials to Myanmar and recent trips by Myanmar’s leaders to China. Former President Thein Sein visited China in late June, and Deputy Senior General Soe Win is currently in China.
The junta has been striving to bolster its relations with China and Russia. Ongoing collaborations include projects in Rakhine State, such as the deep-sea port, Kyaukphyu Economic Zone, and natural gas initiatives. Reports indicate that China is also coordinating with the Arakan Army (AA) regarding these projects.
