Myanmar’s Road Transport Administration Department has announced that taxes will now be imposed on electric vehicles (EVs) based on vehicle type and battery capacity, calculated according to the original value of the vehicles.
The tax collection took effect starting April 1, applying to EVs imported from abroad under the Completely Built-Up (CBU) system after import declarations are filed.
According to the announcement, commercial vehicles, cargo trucks, and passenger vehicles (with more than 15 passengers including the driver) will be taxed at a rate of 3 percent.
For battery capacity, EVs will be taxed as follows:
Up to 30 kWh: 10 percent
31 kWh to 60 kWh: 20 percent
61 kWh to 90 kWh: 30 percent
Above 91 kWh: 40 percent
In addition, dual-purpose vehicles such as pickup trucks and double cabs will be subject to a 30 percent tax rate.
During the pilot project period, EVs were exempt from import taxes, and initial registration processes were facilitated until March 31. Starting from April 1, however, all newly imported EVs are now subject to taxation.
