Myanmar’s former president Win Myint is reportedly living under conditions to house arrest following his recent release, according to a source close to the National League for Democracy who spoke to New Day Myanmar on condition of anonymity.
The source said that some senior NLD figures are also under surveillance, including party spokesperson Dr. Myo Nyunt.
“After the president’s release, various media outlets and lobby groups began speculating and commenting widely. We believe that led to the current situation. Security has now been tightened at his residence in Naypyidaw, with checks on all entries and exits. This is effectively a form of house arrest,” the source said, adding that the situation has been in place since April 19.
Dr. Myo Nyunt, who recently gave interviews to BBC and some Myanmar media outlets based abroad, has reportedly been summoned for questioning, and restrictions have been imposed on his media engagements.
New Day Myanmar attempted to contact Dr. Myo Nyunt for comment but had not received a response at the time of reporting.
U Win Myint was released under an amnesty on April 17. Within days of his release, he is now said to be living under tight security restrictions at his residence.
No official statement has been issued by the military authorities regarding the situation.
