Junta Leader Says He Does Not Care That the Election Is Not Recognized Internationally

25 January 2026

Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing said he does not understand—and does not care—that the election is not recognized by the international community.

He made the remarks while responding to questions from some media outlets after inspecting polling stations in Chanmyathazi Township, Mandalay Region, on the morning of January 25, as part of the third phase of the election.

“There are two reasons why people do not come to vote. One is that they do not support anyone, and the other is that they cannot come due to security conditions. Those who vote do so freely because they support someone. We do not understand—and do not care—that the international community does not recognize the votes cast by the people,” the junta leader said.

The junta is continuing the third phase of its election from the early morning of January 25 in 61 townships across Myanmar.
