The junta’s propaganda outlets announced today that over six million students have enrolled for the 2024-25 academic year, marking an increase of one million compared to the previous year.

According to the announcement, published in the state-run Myanmar Alin newspaper, a total of 6,276,691 students have registered across the country as of June 1. This figure includes primary, middle, and high school students under the Department of Basic Education from May 23 to June 1.

Rising fees at private and international curriculum schools, including tuition, entry fees, and uniform costs, have led many middle-class and government employee parents to opt for public schools. Last year, school enrollments stood at over 5.2 million, indicating a significant increase this year.

However, students in conflict-affected areas continue to face challenges in accessing education. The National Unity Government (NUG)’s Ministry of Education has recognized and granted extensions to 55 schools. Many CDM (Civil Disobedience Movement) students are combining studies at NUG schools with international examinations.

One parent of a 7-year-old child who has just enrolled in Grade 1 told New Day Myanmar, “I plan to have my child attend government school while also preparing for Cambridge Exams according to their level. We worry about the sustainability of international schools due to long-term affordability.”

Some students, having been out of school for extended periods, are returning to education this year under the promoted education system, which has allowed parents to re-enroll their children.
