The Independent Myanmar Journalists Association (IMJA) successfully held an election for its second-term Executive Committee on Aug. 30, electing 15 members, according to a statement from the association’s Election Commission.

The commission said the vote was conducted in accordance with principles of fairness, transparency and respect for the wishes of IMJA members, who cast ballots to select the new Executive Committee.

According to the election results, 15 candidates were elected to serve on the association’s second Executive Committee.

The election was overseen by an Election Commission comprising representatives from several Myanmar media and journalists’ organisations, including the Independent Press Council Myanmar (IPCM), Myanmar Journalism Institute (MJI), Myanmar Women Journalists Society (MWJS), Myanmar Women in Media (MWiM), Myanmar Journalists Club (MJC) and the Exiled Myanmar Journalists Network (EMJN), as well as a veteran journalist.

The commission thanked representatives of the participating organisations and the veteran journalist for contributing their time, experience and expertise throughout the election process.

It also expressed appreciation to IMJA members who voted, the candidates, the election organising committee and those who provided technical and administrative support.

The Election Commission said it hoped the newly elected Executive Committee would continue efforts to promote press freedom, journalists’ rights and safety, and the development of Myanmar’s media sector, while upholding IMJA’s objectives and core values and representing the interests of its members.

The commission described the Aug. 30 vote as a successful election process that allowed IMJA members to freely express their choices in selecting the association’s new leadership.
