Myanmar’s military authorities said an official from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) met detained former State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi on 3 August, marking a rare publicly disclosed visit by an international humanitarian organisation.

According to a statement released by the junta, Arnaud de Baecque, the ICRC’s Head of Delegation in Myanmar, met Suu Kyi on Monday morning.

The statement did not disclose where the meeting took place, how long it lasted, or what issues were discussed, including Suu Kyi’s health or conditions of detention.

De Baecque serves as the ICRC’s Head of Delegation and country representative in Myanmar.

The military authorities announced on 30 April that Suu Kyi had been transferred from Naypyidaw Prison to a designated residence to continue serving the remainder of her prison sentence.

The ICRC routinely seeks confidential access to detainees to assess their living conditions, treatment and health. Under the organisation’s standard practice, its findings are discussed privately with the detaining authorities rather than being made public.

As of publication, the ICRC had not issued a separate public statement confirming or commenting on the meeting.
