Between July 2023 and August 2024, nearly 1,000 people were killed due to acts of violence in Sagaing Region, according to a report released by Data For Myanmar on December 12.
The report details that 958 civilians lost their lives, and 1,119 were injured in the region during this 13-month period. In August 2024 alone, 49 civilians were killed and 78 were injured across 15 townships in Sagaing.
The highest numbers of casualties were recorded in Kalay, Monywa, Shwebo, and Sagaing districts, with a total of 349 deaths reported in these areas.
According to the report, 95% of civilian deaths were caused by targeted airstrikes, artillery shelling, drone attacks, and landmines.
Among these incidents, airstrikes alone accounted for 140 civilian deaths and 236 injuries during the 13 months. The report highlights that 63% of those killed were men aged 18 and above, while women and children were predominantly victims of drone strikes, landmines, artillery, and airstrikes.
