Junta Airstrike on Medical Facility in Pauktaw Kills 17, Including Prisoners and Civilians

September 10, 2024

An airstrike by the military junta targeted a medical facility in Shin Ywar village, Pauktaw Township, Rakhine State, killing 17 people and injuring 10 others, according to a statement by the Arakan Army (AA). The facility was treating prisoners and junta soldiers recovering from injuries.

The attack occurred on September 8, 2024, at approximately 6:50 PM and 6:55 PM, when two bombs were dropped by junta jets on the site. Among those killed were senior military officers in poor health, suspected junta informants, and civilians, including children, who were receiving medical care at the facility.

AA stated that those targeted included detainees being investigated by the junta and local civilians, alongside AA medical personnel who were providing treatment. The facility had also been sheltering prisoners who had fallen ill and were in need of urgent care.

This follows a separate incident on September 6, when junta forces from the No. 12 Police Battalion and Point Naval Base launched an artillery attack on Pauktaw, damaging several civilian homes.
