UNHCR Supports Bangladesh Interim Government’s Pledge to Continue Rohingya Support

August 26, 2024

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has expressed its support for the commitment made by the leader of Bangladesh’s interim government, Mohammad Yunus, to continue providing assistance and protection to the Rohingya community residing in Bangladesh.

August 25, 2024, marks the seventh anniversary of the mass exodus of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar into Bangladesh. In light of this, organizations working on the Rohingya issue in Bangladesh have called for continued humanitarian aid and protection for the 1.35 million Rohingya refugees currently in the country. These organizations have requested $852 million in humanitarian aid for 2024.

Although Interim Government Leader Yunus has pledged to continue supporting the Rohingya, he also called on the international community to unite in their efforts to ensure that the Rohingya can return to Myanmar with full human rights protections.

On the seventh anniversary of the Rohingya genocide, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated the U.S. government’s commitment to continue providing assistance to the Rohingya and all ethnic groups in Myanmar.
