Third Navy Chief Removed from Position Since Coup

July 12, 2024

Deputy Admiral Zwe Win Myint, the third Navy Chief since the 2021 coup, has been removed from his position, according to recent reports. Some sources indicate that he submitted a resignation letter, while others suggest that he was dismissed.

Deputy Admiral Zwe Win Myint succeeded Admiral Moe Aung and held the position for over six months. His removal marks the third change in the Navy’s leadership within a span of just over three years. Admiral Moe Aung was reassigned in January to the role of Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC), leading to Zwe Win Myint’s promotion.

The speculated reason for Zwe Win Myint’s removal is linked to military defeats against the Arakan Army (AA) in Rakhine’s coastal areas, including Thandwe. However, there has been no official statement from the junta regarding his dismissal.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing has previously appointed former Navy Chiefs Admiral Tin Aung San as the Defense Minister and Admiral Moe Aung as a National Security Advisor and Minister at the SAC Office.
