Thailand has begun stricter enforcement on tourist visas for Myanmar nationals, who previously could stay in Thailand for up to two months. Since the enforcement of Myanmar’s conscription law in February 2024, many Myanmar citizens have been extending their stay in Thailand by periodically renewing their tourist visas or enrolling in schools to change their visa type. However, recent reports indicate that applications are being more rigorously scrutinized and denied.
Recently, the Thai Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City reportedly rejected tourist visa applications from over 100 Myanmar nationals. “The pressure is on from every side, not just for tourist visas but also student visas,” said a Myanmar student studying in Thailand, explaining that students applying from Laos for educational visas are also facing denials.
A visa agent stated that while 100 applications were rejected in Vietnam, other Thai consulates may also begin stricter screening soon. The agent remarked, “After Thailand’s Prime Minister met with Myanmar’s military leader in China, there were reports of data sharing requests from the military. Visa denials may be related to this collaboration, and we’ll need to see if other consulates follow suit.”
In October, Thai police officials visited Naypyidaw for bilateral discussions with Myanmar junta police, further intensifying speculation about cooperation between the two governments.
