A total of 63 women were killed and 62 others injured in military attacks across Myanmar during September, according to a report released by the Burmese Women’s Union (BWU) on October 4. The BWU report noted that in addition to the casualties, five women were arbitrarily detained during the same period.
Of the 63 fatalities, 44 were killed in airstrikes, eight in artillery shelling, and six were deliberately murdered. The remainder were victims of drone strikes, arson attacks, and other forms of violence. Shan State recorded the highest number of female casualties, with 21 deaths, followed by Mandalay Region with 15, Sagaing Region with eight, Bago Region with six, Magway Region with four, and three each in Rakhine State and Tanintharyi Region. Mon State reported two female deaths, while Kachin State recorded one.
BWU emphasized that these figures are based on what they could verify and that the actual numbers might be higher.
Since the military coup in February 2021, a total of 806 women have been killed and 3,332 detained over the past three years, according to BWU’s data.
Meanwhile, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) also released a report on October 4, stating that 22 people, including nine women, were killed in Mandalay Region alone in September due to the junta’s violent crackdowns. Another 20 were arrested, further highlighting the ongoing violence against civilians.
