Young people under 40 in Myanmar seeking to travel abroad on a visitor visa are now required to have a guarantor who will sign a document promising their return before they are allowed to leave the country, according to travel industry sources.
The military junta has reportedly intensified checks at the airport for young travelers, particularly those holding PV (Private Visit) passports. Previously, individuals with this type of passport could leave the country if they provided a round-trip ticket, proof of sufficient funds, and a hotel booking. However, it is now reported that young people holding PV passports who have never left the country before are being denied permission to leave.
“Those holding a PV passport who have never traveled abroad before are all being turned away. Hundreds have been sent back. Although the airlines allow them to board, they are being turned back by airport police before they reach immigration,” said one individual who experienced the situation firsthand.
As a result of being denied departure, many travelers have lost the cost of their plane tickets, according to reports.
Travel industry professionals believe that travelers must now have a guarantor in Myanmar who will take responsibility if the traveler does not return. Additionally, travelers are required to fill out a form at the airport one day before their departure.
