The United States government officially welcomed the release of the revered religious leader, Reverend Dr. Samson, who was unjustly imprisoned by the Myanmar military junta. In a statement released on July 23, the U.S. expressed its joy at Dr. Samson’s return to his family and his ability to continue his vital work.
“Rev. Dr. Samson is a prominent and respected religious leader who has courageously advocated for the freedom of belief and practice for all people. We are pleased that he has finally been reunited with his family and can continue his important work,” the statement said.
The U.S. government also called on the Myanmar military junta to end its oppression of religious leaders, communities, places of worship, and to release all political prisoners, democracy advocates, human rights defenders, and members of civil society without delay.
Additionally, the U.S. urged the junta to immediately stop violence against civilians, allow humanitarian assistance without obstruction, and respect the democratic aspirations of the people of Myanmar.
Reverend Dr. Samson had previously visited the White House in 2019 to discuss the Myanmar military’s religious persecution of ethnic minorities with then-President Donald Trump. Despite being sentenced to six years in prison under Article 17(1), Article 505(a), and Article 52(a) by the junta, he was granted amnesty on April 17, 2024, only to be re-arrested within 24 hours.
