Myanmar Junta Says Over 400 People Prosecuted for Disrupting Elections

21 January 2026

The Myanmar military junta has announced that more than 400 people have been identified and prosecuted for disrupting the election processes being carried out by the military.

Deputy Minister for Home Affairs, Lieutenant General Tun Tun Naung, made the statement during the seventh meeting of the Central Supervisory Committee for Security Affairs of the so-called Multi-Party Democracy General Election, held on January 20.

According to the junta’s statement, as of January 19, 2026, a total of 331 cases had been filed under the “Law for the Protection Against the Disruption of Elections” across the Union Territory, regions, and states. A total of 404 people — including 324 men and 80 women — have been arrested and prosecuted.

Lieutenant General Tun Tun Naung said investigations would continue against those carrying out activities and propaganda that could undermine election security.

The junta also claimed that although there were disruptions during both phases of the election process, voters were still able to cast their ballots freely and actively. It said voter turnout reached 52.13 percent in Phase 1 and 55.95 percent in Phase 2.

However, the National Unity Government (NUG) and resistance forces have declared the military-organized elections to be illegal and a sham. The United Nations and the international community have also criticized the polls as neither free nor fair.
