Chinese Influence a Major Obstacle for Myanmar Revolution, Says TNLA’s Gen. Tar Bone Kyaw

August 12, 2025

The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) says that Chinese influence, driven purely by self-interest, is one of the greatest challenges currently facing Myanmar’s revolution.

In a Facebook post on August 12, TNLA General Secretary Gen. Tar Bone Kyaw listed the revolution’s major obstacles: the ruthless actions of the Myanmar military dictatorship, China’s self-serving domination, a public weakened by prolonged oppression, and the inability to establish strong leadership for the movement, among others.

Although the TNLA has captured parts of military-held territory since launching Operation 1027, it has faced intense pressure from the Chinese government, which has been pushing the group to hand back areas under its control to the junta.

Due to this pressure, TNLA Spokesperson Lwe Yeh Oo said during an Aug. 5 press conference that the group would meet again with junta representatives later in August.

She added that under Chinese pressure, the junta had pressured one of the Brotherhood Alliance members to halt operations while continuing offensive campaigns against the other two — the Arakan Army (AA) and TNLA.

“They have rendered the Kokang MNDAA inactive and are focusing their offensives on the AA and TNLA,” he said.

A political analyst told New Day Myanmar that it will be difficult for the TNLA to resist Chinese pressure, especially given the shared border and Beijing’s determination to protect its economic interests.

Gen. Tar Bone Kyaw concluded his remarks by saying, “We will have to overcome these challenges step by step, comrades.”
