Yangon’s Air Pollution Reaches Hazardous Levels

24 February 2026 | New Day Myanmar

Yangon’s air pollution has now reached a hazardous level, according to air quality data released on Monday evening by IQAir, a platform that monitors global air quality indices.

According to IQAir’s measurements, Yangon rose to fourth place on the list of the world’s most polluted cities, with its Air Quality Index (AQI) climbing to 120. This level poses health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses.

Earlier in the day, Yangon ranked only 11th globally for air pollution. Its sharp rise to fourth place by the evening highlights how rapidly air quality in the city has deteriorated.

IQAir data also show that Yangon’s current air pollution level is worse than that of other densely populated and heavily polluted cities such as Mumbai, Jakarta, Bangkok, and Beijing.

Major contributors to the pollution include vehicle emissions on city roads and fine particulate matter such as PM2.5 and PM10. These particles are particularly dangerous as they can severely affect the respiratory system, heart, and lung health.

Under AQI standards, levels between 101 and 150 are considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. Yangon’s current AQI of 120 marks the point at which health risks begin to emerge.

Despite residents directly experiencing these hazardous conditions, Myanmar’s junta-controlled Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has yet to issue any official warnings or public health advisories.

Given the potential health risks, Yangon residents are urged to take precautionary measures, including wearing masks when going outdoors and avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities.
