The United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, Mr. Thomas Andrews, has issued a warning to prevent further genocidal violence in Rakhine State. Speaking with AFP, Mr. Andrews highlighted the intensifying conflict in Rakhine, noting that the Myanmar military is losing territory to the Arakan Army (AA), which is gaining more control.
Mr. Andrews also raised concerns about the Myanmar military allegedly training young Rohingya to fight against the Arakan Army, potentially forcing them into front-line combat without their consent. This situation could lead to severe retaliatory actions against the Rohingya by the Rakhine ethnic group, further exacerbating tensions and violence.
He emphasized the urgent need for measures to prevent the recurrence of genocidal acts in Rakhine State, urging all parties to adhere to international humanitarian laws and protect the vulnerable populations.
