Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar, Julie Bishop, met on August 20 in Beijing to discuss the ongoing situation in Myanmar, according to the Chinese news agency Xinhua.
During the meeting, Wang Yi reaffirmed China’s commitment to respecting Myanmar’s sovereignty, independence, national unity, and territorial integrity. He emphasized that China has consistently pledged not to interfere in Myanmar’s internal affairs and expressed support for ASEAN’s role as the primary pathway to address the crisis in Myanmar.
Julie Bishop, the UN Special Envoy on Myanmar, acknowledged China’s recognition of the significant responsibility she holds in fostering political reform and stability in Myanmar. Wang Yi indicated that China is ready to assist the Special Envoy in her efforts.
Bishop stated that she is eager to work more closely with China, ASEAN, and other stakeholders to handle Myanmar’s issues more effectively through stronger cooperation and deepened relationships.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee.
