In a recent sermon titled “The Virtue of Senior General Min Aung Hlaing,” delivered on August 8 via YouTube and Telegram, ultra-nationalist monk U Wirathu publicly criticized Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the military leader of Myanmar, for the loss of the Eastern Command headquarters in Lashio, Shan State. U Wirathu questioned whether the military leader truly intends to win the ongoing conflict.
U Wirathu, known for his hardline nationalist views, expressed his concerns over the recent military setbacks in Northern Shan State, where key towns and military camps have fallen to resistance forces. He suggested that it might be necessary to ask the regional commanders directly whether they are capable of countering the resistance forces effectively.
In the six-minute video, U Wirathu accused the military of failing to provide adequate support to the troops, leaving soldiers and their families vulnerable. He commented on the lack of reinforcements and supplies, which he claimed resulted in sending the troops “into the jaws of death.”
The monk, who has previously supported the military’s takeover and has been known for his inflammatory rhetoric, shared his dissatisfaction with the current situation in Shan State, stating that Min Aung Hlaing should take responsibility for the losses.
U Wirathu, a prominent figure in Myanmar’s nationalist movement, has faced social media bans for inciting racial and religious hatred. Despite these restrictions, he continues to have a significant following and influence, especially among hardline nationalists in the country.
This criticism comes at a time when the military is facing increasing challenges in its efforts to maintain control over various regions, particularly in the northern and eastern parts of Myanmar.
