TNLA Rejects Military Junta’s Request to Withdraw from Seized Towns Like MNDAA

May 2, 2025

Representatives led by Deputy Commander Tar Gyut Gyar of the Palaung State Liberation Front (PSLF), the political wing of the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), met with a delegation led by Deputy Commander Ko Ko Oo of the Myanmar military (junta) in Kunming, China, on April 28–29 to discuss ceasefire arrangements, according to TNLA’s official statement.

During the meeting, the junta’s representatives proposed that all TNLA troops be withdrawn from towns such as Nawnghkio, Kyaukme, Hsipaw, Mogok, and Mongmit, which are near the self-administered regions of Namhsan and Mantong. However, PSLF/TNLA firmly rejected this request.

As a result, both sides have yet to make further progress on the ceasefire negotiations. Nevertheless, they have agreed to hold another round of talks in August.

The TNLA statement also notes that the ceasefire discussions are closely tied to China’s interest in reopening border trade routes and stabilizing the region. China’s Special Envoy, Mr. Deng Xijun, has been mediating to help achieve a broader ceasefire similar to that of the Kokang-based MNDAA. The proposal includes halting aerial bombings, artillery shelling, drone strikes, and offensive military operations.
