Political prisoners, including detainees, were abruptly transferred from Kyaikmaraw Prison, according to a statement from the Political Prisoners Network (PPNM) on June 15.
The transfer occurred after an incident on the evening of June 12, where a prisoner was electrocuted while erecting an iron barrier between the men’s and women’s wards. This led to an emergency medical request for the injured prisoner. Following this request, over 100 political prisoners were transferred to other prisons.
“We consider this an unjust transfer. They believe they can act without consequences, treating political prisoners unfairly. We condemn such actions and will continue to strive for the release of over 20,000 political prisoners currently detained,” said Zu Zu May Yon, founder of PPNM, to New Day Myanmar.
Most of the transferred prisoners are political detainees, though their new locations are currently unknown. PPNM stated that they would continue to investigate and uncover further details.
The prison authorities had come to negotiate emergency medical treatment for the electrocuted prisoner. However, the political prisoners who made the request were subsequently transferred as a result, according to PPNM’s announcement.
The exact locations of the transferred political prisoners remain undisclosed, and PPNM is actively investigating to gather more information.
