Six members of a family were killed this morning around 8 AM when an artillery shell struck their home on Thaya Road, Ward 1, in Lashio, according to local sources.
The victims were of Kachin ethnicity, and arrangements are being made by the Kachin Association to transport their bodies, as reported by local humanitarian groups.
“An artillery shell hit the house, though some say it might have been a rocket. We’re not certain yet. The family of six, consisting of three men and three women, all perished. The Kachin Association is currently arranging to transport their bodies,” a local humanitarian worker from Lashio told New Day Myanmar.
The group responsible for the shelling is not yet known.
Fighting has been reported since June 29 in nearby Nanhun and Nampong villages, with continuous artillery shelling from the military council targeting Lashio, sources added.
The Northern Alliance, which includes the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), reported that, as part of the second phase of Operation 1027, artillery and airstrikes in Shan State have resulted in the deaths of 25 civilians and injuries to 37 others, with 50 homes destroyed as of July 2.
