Sitagu Sayadaw Urges Forgiveness Following the Fatal Shooting of Win Nimmita Monastery Sayadaw

June 22, 2024

On the afternoon of June 22, Sitagu Sayadaw Bhaddanta Ñanissara visited Win Nimmita Monastery in Bago to address the tragic death of Sayadaw Bhaddanta Muniññābhivamsa, who was fatally shot by the military. Sitagu Sayadaw urged the monastic community to embrace forgiveness and tolerance in light of the incident.

“Given the current state of the country, unity is crucial. Without cooperation between the government and the Sangha, our nation will face many hardships. Therefore, I urge you to forgive, forget, and embrace tolerance for the sake of the country’s stability and unity,” Sitagu Sayadaw addressed the monks.

Known for his close relationship with the military leadership, including Min Aung Hlaing, Sitagu Sayadaw has previously engaged in international projects, such as building a Shwedagon Pagoda replica in Russia. He is also scheduled to travel to Switzerland on June 23 for a medical check-up.

“In Bangkok, we often see monks and laypeople from Myanmar visiting hospitals. Given the crowd, I prefer to avoid it. Hence, I will go to Switzerland for a medical check-up,” Sitagu Sayadaw mentioned during his address at the funeral of Sayadaw Bhaddanta Muniññābhivamsa.

Although Sitagu Sayadaw will not attend the funeral ceremony personally, he mentioned that he would send a condolence message if the funeral committee agrees. The final rites for Sayadaw Bhaddanta Muniññābhivamsa will be held on June 27 at Win Nimmita Monastery in Kalyani Ward, Bago, where his body is currently being honored.
