After confirming the capture of Depayin town in Sagaing Region on the morning of August 18, resistance forces were forced to temporarily withdraw due to heavy airstrikes and a counter-offensive by the junta forces later that same day.
The battle for Depayin, which began on August 16, saw the resistance forces successfully taking control of key junta positions by August 17. However, the junta responded with relentless airstrikes and reinforcements on August 17, leading to a strategic withdrawal by the resistance forces, according to a statement from the Depayin Township People’s Administration.
The operation to capture Depayin was carried out under the coordination of the Shwebo District Command of the NUG’s Ministry of Defense, with participation from battalions within Shwebo District, as well as the Depayin Township PDF and Butalin Township PDF.
During the battle, some junta soldiers and Pyu Saw Htee militia members fled, while 123 individuals, including two Pyu Saw Htee members, 41 non-CDM staff, and 80 family members, surrendered under a white flag, according to PDF sources.
