A local woman was killed and a man injured in Thibaw Township, Northern Shan State, due to artillery shelling by the Myanmar military, according to a statement from the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA). The incident occurred on the evening of September 1 at around 5:30 PM when soldiers from the 23rd Infantry Battalion (Khlar Yar 23) fired artillery shells toward a civilian area in the Kongsong (Lisu) Village.
The shell hit a house, injuring 47-year-old Ko Kyaw Myint in the back, shoulder, arm, and face due to shrapnel from the explosion. This follows a similar incident on August 31, when a shell fired by the military struck in the Nyaung Ko Pin neighborhood, killing 52-year-old Daw Sein Pwint, who was hit directly in the chest by the shrapnel.
Since August 1, the military has continued shelling and airstrikes targeting civilian areas in Thibaw, resulting in the deaths of 22 locals, including children, and injuries to over 60 people, according to TNLA reports.
