Nationalist groups held a rally in Yangon on January 27 to express support for the Myanmar delegation appearing at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in connection with the case filed by The Gambia, which accuses Myanmar of committing genocide against the Rohingya.
The rally took place in the afternoon in front of Maha Bandula Park in Yangon. Speeches were led by Sayadaw Ashin Thuzitta, U Win Ko Ko Latt, and U Htein Lin.
The participants from nationalist groups joined the rally, holding placards reading slogans such as “Wishing success to the Myanmar delegation,” “We reject false accusations of genocide,” and “Stop making accusations without solid evidence.”
Regarding the current status of the ICJ case, the court is continuing to hear the main case in which The Gambia alleges that Myanmar committed genocide against the Rohingya. The provisional measures ordered by the court in 2020 remain in force and must continue to be observed.
These provisional measures include obligations to protect the Rohingya, to prevent acts of genocide from occurring, and to preserve evidence related to the allegations. At present, both sides are continuing to submit their written pleadings in stages, and the ICJ has not yet issued a final ruling.
The support rally was held from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
