Just hours after Min Aung Hlaing extended an invitation for political dialogue to ethnic armed organizations (EROs) and People’s Defense Forces (PDFs), the military junta launched a series of airstrikes on civilian areas in Lashio, Shan State, killing two and injuring at least five, including a pregnant woman.
The attacks occurred on the morning of September 27, with three bombing runs carried out at 3:36 a.m., 3:40 a.m., and 3:50 a.m. by the junta’s air force. The strikes targeted residential areas in Ward 1 and the central market, with bombs hitting homes and causing fires at the Cherry Market.
“The third bombing was even worse, hitting Ward 1 and five bombs fell in quick succession. There were at least five injured, including a pregnant woman who was hit in the leg. It’s possible there are more casualties,” a local resident told New Day Myanmar. Communication lines are down in some areas, with only Wi-Fi available, making it difficult to get more information.
The central market bombing led to significant damage to shops, and fires broke out in the aftermath of the bombing.
This is just the latest in a series of airstrikes on Lashio by the junta, with similar attacks on September 8, 9, 21, 24, 25, and now the 27th. The junta has targeted civilian areas, including hotels like the Yati Hotel and Fully Light Hotel, as well as educational facilities such as Lashio Technological College. The attacks have resulted in widespread destruction and civilian casualties.
Despite the junta’s calls for peace talks, the ongoing airstrikes across northern Shan State, including on key towns like Kyaukme, Naungcho, Hsipaw, and Lashio, suggest that the military’s approach remains one of violence and aggression.
