Legal Team of Leader Aung San Suu Kyi Again Requests Access to Meet with Her

November 14, 2024

The legal team for State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been detained in Naypyidaw by the Myanmar military junta, has formally requested permission to meet with her. Despite submitting an official request, the junta has not yet granted access, according to sources.

A hearing was scheduled on November 13 in relation to the inheritance case for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s property at 54 University Avenue, Yangon. However, the legal team requested a postponement as they had not been allowed to meet her to receive instructions. Consequently, the Kamayut District Court has rescheduled the hearing to November 21.

The legal team had initially requested permission from the junta on October 28 to meet with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in relation to the inheritance case, but they have received no response to date. Since December 30, 2022, when the junta issued its final orders concerning her cases, neither her legal team nor the public has had any direct contact with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

The military council has also restricted her legal team from communicating with both domestic and international media. Since January 2023, the legal team has repeatedly submitted requests in writing to meet her, but these requests have been ignored, according to sources close to the legal team.

At 79 years old, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has faced years of isolation from family members, including her son, as well as from her legal team and international organizations. Despite numerous appeals for access, the junta has maintained strict restrictions for nearly two years. Following convictions on 19 charges, she received a 33-year sentence, although five charges were pardoned in August 2023, reducing her sentence to 27 years.
