Myanmar’s military junta carried out at least 741 airstrikes nationwide following the powerful earthquake that struck on March 28, according to data gathered up to May 13. Of those, more than 516 airstrikes occurred after the junta declared a unilateral ceasefire on April 2, claiming the pause was meant to allow humanitarian efforts in the aftermath of the quake in Mandalay and Sagaing regions.
Despite the ceasefire announcement, junta airstrikes have continued, frequently targeting civilian areas including villages, schools, and hospitals. Six major attacks since the ceasefire have resulted in the deaths of over 113 civilians, with some incidents involving mass casualties, such as in Ohtain Dwin and Tun Yawai villages.
The airstrikes have not been limited to conflict zones but also struck peaceful towns in Kachin, Karen, Shan, Sagaing, Magway, and Rakhine regions. ISP Myanmar reports that among the 741 recorded airstrikes, at least 150 involved drone attacks, over 32 were conducted using helicopters, and 559 were carried out using fighter jets.
These attacks have also targeted non-military sites such as religious buildings, hospitals, and schools in areas no longer under junta control.
Since the February 2021 coup, the junta has launched a total of 11,916 airstrikes across the country, ISP Myanmar reported.
