At the 112th International Labour Conference being held from June 3 to June 13 in Geneva, Switzerland, Mr. Hideyuki SHIMIZU, a representative of the Japanese Trade Union Confederation (JTUC-RENGO), raised concerns about the delay in taking action against the Myanmar junta’s violent actions.
He stated, “In Myanmar, the junta continues to suppress labor movements and democratic activities. The ILO must address this situation during the conference. Despite the findings and recommendations of the ILO Commission of Inquiry under Article 26 of the ILO Constitution, the junta has failed to comply. JTUC-RENGO strongly condemns the junta’s actions and will continue to support the Confederation of Trade Unions Myanmar (CTUM), ITUC, and ITUC-Asia Pacific in their democratic efforts.”
On June 7, the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) also expressed its commitment to supporting labor and human rights in Myanmar, emphasizing the importance of using the ILO’s mechanisms to help the people of Myanmar escape military dictatorship and improve their lives.
Additionally, on June 6, a representative from the Philippines Trade Union Confederation urged the ILO to take action against the Myanmar military under the ILO Constitution and recognize the National Unity Government (NUG) as the legitimate government of Myanmar.
