In a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, former Myanmar military leader Senior General Than Shwe requested China’s assistance in preventing foreign interference in Myanmar and supporting domestic stability, according to a report by Chinese news agency Xinhua.
During the meeting, Than Shwe emphasized the importance of China’s role as a close and trusted neighbor, expressing hopes that China would continue to provide valuable support in defending Myanmar from foreign influence and maintaining internal peace.
Wang Yi, in response, reiterated China’s commitment to respecting Myanmar’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. He affirmed that China would continue to uphold the principles of non-interference and mutual support in the relationship between the two countries.
Wang Yi also stated that China supports Myanmar’s efforts to hold peaceful and smooth national elections under its constitutional framework and to restart its democratic transition. He underscored China’s opposition to any external forces that might destabilize Myanmar and pledged continued cooperation in the development of China-Myanmar relations.
The meeting highlighted the importance of China-Myanmar relations and the ongoing commitment of both nations to maintaining a close and mutually beneficial partnership.
