Continuous heavy rainfall in various townships within Kachin State has led to rising river levels and flooding in several areas. As a result, the Myitkyina-Waingmaw road has been cut off since June 30, causing significant disruptions in transportation, according to local sources.
The Irrawaddy River in Myitkyina has exceeded the danger level as of the early hours of July 1, resulting in flooding in Myitkyina, Waingmaw, and Chipwe. A local truck driver reported to New Day Myanmar, “Large trucks can’t pass the Myitkyina-Puta-O road since yesterday due to landslides blocking the way. Some smaller vehicles are still trying to navigate, but it’s very risky, and the situation could worsen at any time.”
Heavy rain since June 29 in the northern towns of Myitkyina, such as Puta-O and Machanbaw, has caused rivers and streams to overflow, leading to landslides and severe flooding. “This morning’s situation has become much worse. Some people are trapped in their homes, especially in the lower areas. Social rescue groups are doing what they can,” a local resident from Myitkyina told New Day Myanmar.
The flooding has not only affected residential homes but also forced some IDP camps to relocate. Efforts are ongoing to provide assistance and ensure the safety of affected residents.
