Female Journalist Detained by AA Remains Incommunicado for Over a Week

September 29, 2025

A female journalist detained by the Arakan Army (AA) has been held for more than a week without release or contact with her family, according to local sources.

The journalist, Mudra, works for the Border News Agency (BNA). She was taken from her home in Maungdaw at around 11 a.m. on September 20 by members of the intelligence wing of the United League of Arakan/Arakan Army (ULA/AA).

Since her detention, Mudra has not been allowed any communication with her family. As of September 29, nine days after her arrest, her relatives remain unable to confirm her condition or whereabouts.

BNA’s editor-in-chief, Ko Kaung Myat Naing, told New Day Myanmar: “The ULA/AA side said she wasn’t detained but only taken in for questioning. The question is, for how long can someone be questioned? For how long do they have the right to do this? These are legal questions that should be raised.”

Both the Independent Myanmar Journalists Association (IMJA) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) have called on the AA to immediately release Mudra.
