The Amnesty International (AI) reported on July 8 that Chinese and Singaporean companies are supplying aviation fuel to the Myanmar junta. The companies involved include the Chinese state-owned CNOOC Trading (Singapore) Pte. Ltd and Singapore-based Sahara Energy International Pte. Ltd, which have reportedly made two to three shipments of aviation fuel this year.
This supply of aviation fuel comes despite international sanctions imposed to prevent such transactions, particularly due to the junta’s use of airstrikes against civilians. The shipments highlight the ongoing defiance of these sanctions by Chinese and Singaporean entities.
According to AI, the aviation fuel is being transported to Myanmar via the Chinese oil tanker HUITONG78, which ships the fuel from Vietnam. The UN and other international bodies have imposed sanctions to prohibit the sale of aviation fuel to the junta, condemning its aerial attacks on civilian populations.
These reports have raised significant concerns among international human rights organizations, emphasizing the need for stricter enforcement of sanctions to cut off the junta’s access to resources used for military operations against civilians.
