The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) has called on the Indian government to cease the detention and forced repatriation of Rohingya refugees who have fled from Myanmar. On July 2, CERD issued an appeal to the Indian authorities, expressing concern over the treatment of Rohingya refugees and urging India to halt any actions that would forcibly return them to Myanmar.
CERD highlighted the presence of inflammatory hate speech and discriminatory remarks against Rohingya refugees, noting that such actions are contributing to an environment of hostility and prejudice. The committee emphasized that these remarks are not only spreading among the general population but also being propagated by politicians and prominent figures.
The Indian government has been urged to condemn these actions strongly and to undertake thorough investigations to hold the perpetrators accountable. CERD stressed the importance of taking effective measures to prevent and address violations of human rights and to ensure the protection of Rohingya refugees.
The current situation, according to CERD, has the potential to escalate into conflicts, and therefore, it is essential to reassess and address the underlying issues proactively. The committee’s recommendations are in line with the international commitment to eliminating all forms of racial discrimination, as outlined in various international human rights treaties.
CERD expressed particular concern over the mass detention of Rohingya refugees, including children, and pointed out instances where detainees were denied proper legal proceedings or access to legal representation. The committee underscored the need for appropriate interventions to safeguard the rights and well-being of the Rohingya community in India.
