Airstrike Hits Village Shelter for Displaced Persons in Pekon Township

November 10, 2024

On the night of November 8, around 11:30 PM, the Myanmar military carried out an airstrike on Ashay Karla village in Pekon Township, southern Shan State, despite no active fighting in the area, according to local sources.

The airstrike reportedly damaged buildings and vehicles, resulting in the deaths of two internally displaced persons (IDPs) — a man and a woman in their 40s, originally from See Sein. The village had been hosting IDPs who had fled from ongoing conflict.

Earlier the same day, around 3 PM, the military also shelled two villages in Loikaw Township, Nan Koe and Thayet Pin. In the attack on Nan Koe village, four civilians, including a 10-year-old child, lost their lives.

The casualties included displaced persons from the conflict zones of Daw Sei and Yay Kan villages, who had been seeking refuge in Nan Koe. Despite no fighting in the area, locals reported that the military deliberately targeted the village sheltering the displaced individuals with heavy artillery.

Due to the shelling on Nan Koe village, a 30-year-old man, another man of the same age, a 24-year-old woman, and a 10-year-old girl were killed.

On October 31, a drone attack targeted a truck carrying displaced people from Ban Mawk village in Pinlaung Township, southern Shan State, resulting in the deaths of four people, including an 8-year-old child and three women.

The military junta has conducted over 1,700 airstrikes in Karenni State, including in Pekon and Moe Bye Townships, since taking power in 2021, according to a statement from the Progressive Karenni People Force.
