The Arakan Army (AA) announced today that the death toll of civilians massacred in Byine Phyu Village, near Sittwe in Rakhine State, has risen to 76. This tragic update follows the junta’s violent crackdown on May 29 in Sat Roe Kya Village Tract (formerly Byine Phyu Village).
The AA has stated that detailed information about the victims will be released soon. The massacre occurred when over 100 junta soldiers arrived in seven vehicles, surrounded the village, and detained its residents. The junta soldiers reportedly committed atrocities, including raping women, burning homes, and looting valuable items. Many villagers were taken hostage and are still being held by the military.
The National Unity Government (NUG) condemned the mass killing in a statement on June 3, denouncing the junta’s brutal actions. The NUG has vowed to seek justice for the victims and hold those responsible accountable through all possible legal avenues.
Yangon-based student unions, including the Yangon University Students’ Union (UYSU) and the Student Armed Forces (SAF), also issued statements on June 2, pledging to work with all resistance forces to ensure justice for the victims of the Byine Phyu Village massacre.
