Over the past two weeks, intense military operations in Northern Shan State, particularly in the towns of Naung Cho, Kyaukme, and Thibaw, have resulted in the deaths of 46 civilians and injuries to 35 others, according to a report released today by the Shan Human Rights Foundation.
These casualties have occurred during the second phase of Operation 1027, with data collected from June 19 to July 4. This period includes the aftermath of airstrikes by the military junta on Kyaukme on June 19.
Similar to the first phase of Operation 1027, the junta has continued to target towns along the China-Myanmar oil and gas pipeline with heavy artillery, aerial bombardments, and 500-pound bombs, causing significant civilian casualties and property destruction. These actions have resulted in substantial damage to civilian infrastructure, including more than 150 homes and buildings.
The Shan Human Rights Foundation’s report indicates that the actual number of ground casualties may be higher than reported. The town of Kyaukme suffered the highest number of casualties, with 44 fatalities and 25 injuries.
The ongoing conflict has predominantly affected the towns of Naung Cho, Thibaw, and Kyaukme, all of which are situated along the critical China-Myanmar natural gas pipeline route.
